'MAGHRENOV addresses Mediterranean innovative markets in the field of Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (RE&EE) with three main objectives: • Explore practical methods devoted to capacity building and to fostering innovation on Mediterranean RE& EE markets • Favour convergence between EU and MPCs initiatives both for the development of sustainable energies adapted to regional specificities and for the establishment of a shared and dynamic Research and Innovation Systems (R&IS) in the domain • Create real mobility between young academics and entrepreneurs in both regions (EU and MPC) making use of the build-up capacity Expected impact of the project thus concerns practical results from our capacity building activities as well as more general lessons addressed to stakeholders and policy makers both in the EU and the MPCs. Our implementation method rests on a double experience developed actively on both sides of the Mediterranean these last years: • The research and innovation EU policy as supported by the SET Plan (Strategic Energy Technology Plan) and the KIC (Knowledge and innovation community) INNOENERGY established by the EIT (European Institute of Technology) in the domain of sustainable energies, on the one hand, • and the different plans carried out in the Maghreb in support to the deployment of renewable energies while reforming deeply the Education, Research and Innovation systems, on the other hand.
Our approach inscribes also in the framework of the current EUROMED dialogue on research and innovation. Especially, we take full account of the analyses and recommendations delivered in the context of the works carried out by the Inco-Net MIRA (Mediterranean Innovation and Research coordination Action) toward the establishment of a Euro-Mediterranean Innovation Space (EMIS). We also take account of the works and conclusions of the recent Euro-Mediterranean Conference on Research and Innovation (Barcelona, 2-3 April 2012).'
Research and innovation (R&I) can help Mediterranean countries to develop and promote sustainable energy. An EU initiative is supporting R&I in the renewable energy and energy efficiency (RE&EE) domain in the Mediterranean basin.
With the understanding that R&I plays a major role in promoting sustainable and inclusive economic growth and job creation in the region, the EU has funded the project http://www.maghrenov.eu/ (MAGHRENOV) (Convergence between EU and MAGHREB MPC innovation systems in the field of renewable energy and energy efficiency (RE&EE). A test-bed for fostering Euro-Mediterranean innovation space (EMIS)), the consortium aims to bring together various stakeholders from European and Maghreb countries to set up a common Euro-Mediterranean innovation area.
MAGHRENOV centres around three pillars in realising the foreseen innovation space. The first concerns building human resource and knowledge capacity and fostering innovation in Mediterranean RE&EE sectors. The second brings together RE&EE initiatives in Member States and Mediterranean Partner Countries (MPCs) to support development of sustainable energies and to establish R&I systems. The final pillar implements mobility schemes between young academics and the businesses and research communities in the EU and MPCs.
During the first year, project partners organised a workshop to define future needs in the capacity building of education, training and mobility. It also studied the requirements of the current Mediterranean RE&EE knowledge base. Entrepreneurial education and industrial internship programmes have been set up. A task force has been established to plan the EuroMed Masters programme.
A knowledge database containing information on relevant RE&EE activities has been created and is available on the project website. It will be continuously updated with information such as innovative technology roadmaps and competence mapping.
The team also designed a business support tool for entrepreneurs that provides guidance in technology and human resources, market access and financial resources.
By continuing to strengthen R&I efforts and collaboration in RE&EE, MAGHRENOV will be well positioned to offer opportunities to develop new business, create new jobs and contribute to the economic growth of the Mediterranean basin.
