 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'Eastways of Science aims to carry on and to improve Highways of Science, the project the researcher worked at thanks to a Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship at the Centre A. Koyré in Paris from July 2005 to June 2007. Highways of Science meant to construct a prototype of a multitask data-base user-friendly, that takes into account evidence gathered from scientific and learned correspondences (personal biographies, scientific institutions, instruments, natural specimina and objects, places related to scientific practices) so as to define and highlight the contents, the networks and the ways of transmission of cultural and scientific information in early modern Europe. Eastways of Science aims to extend Highways of Science in two different respects. As to space, because it takes into account the so called «fringes» of the «Republic of letters»: the Mitteleuropa areas, especially Poland and the Habsburg Empire’s «periphery» (Bohemia, Moravia, Hungary and Rumania). As to time, because it looks further at the second half of the 17th century, the age when the experiment became the knowledge basis of modern natural philosophy. Most of all, Eastways of Science project means to climb over Highways of Science limits and difficulties by creating an electronic platform, an on-line interactive environment XML-based, that for the first time applies the Web2 system resources to an electronic archive of scientific-historical interest. In this case too, information will be arranged and available in a spatial and geographical fashion, so as to construct a map of the information fluxes in the western European cultural space, following the model of a traffic stream visualized on a luminous screen. The researcher and the University of Rome La Sapienza purpose to cooperate with the project academies and research institutes in Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovack Republic and Romany who are working on electronic editions of national sources of historical interest.'

Introduzione (Teaser)

Sharing sources on the transmission of scientific and cultural information in early modern Europe has been made easier, thanks to EU-funded research. The project has built on previous work and advanced a valuable online interactive environment.
