 Obiettivo del progetto (Objective)

'The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation is a well-established national funding organisation with longstanding expertise in managing fellowship programmes for highly qualified researchers based on individual-driven trans-national mobility. Along with the implementation of the European Charter for Researchers in accordance with the Foundation's Implementation Protocol, Community co-funding reinforces the existing, highly successful Humboldt Research Fellowship Programme for Postdoctoral Researchers and increases the number of incoming fellows sponsored. High standards of excellence and open competition are combined with professional management and the highest possible degree of freedom for applicants regarding the chosen field of research, host institution, and duration of the research stay. The Foundation's client-friendliness and post-scheme network support have set benchmarks in the past. By participating in the COFUND scheme, it wishes to share its expertise and help exploit synergies between European funding programmes to increase mobility options and life-long career development of researchers in Europe.'

Introduzione (Teaser)

The Humboldt Programme is Germany's premier postdoctoral research fellowship scheme. An EU project extended it, allocating more funds to 165 applicants over previously supported numbers.

Descrizione progetto (Article)

Germany's Humboldt Research Fellowship for Postdoctoral Researchers supports outstanding international applicants, having a recent PhD, to conduct research in Germany. Studies have no restrictions regarding topic and may be undertaken at any German university, while placements last between six and 24 months.

The EU boosted the scheme by funding the 'Boosting research and integration in Europe through Humboldt fellowships' (http://www.humboldt-foundation.de/web/humboldt-fellowship-postdoc.html (B.R.I.G.H.T)) project. This EU co-funding increased the total number of fellowships and provided larger amounts to each applicant, while also offering expanded benefits for recipients accompanied by families. The project ran from November 2009 to October 2013.

B.R.I.G.H.T was intended to provide 145 additional fellowships over its 4-year duration. However, given that fewer than expected candidates needed the family support, the project was able to offer 165 places in total within the same budget.

The benefit of projects such as B.R.I.G.H.T is that bringing together talented researchers means shared expertise and enhanced research skills. The mixing leads to higher quality European research.
