'With 3.5 % of the total workforce composed by researchers, Trieste is appropriately known as a “City of Science” and its network of excellence of universities and national and international research organizations is referred to as the “Trieste System”. The STAR project is an offspring of the memorandum signed in 2008 whereby the University of Trieste, the Trieste Municipality and Province, and other members of the Trieste System agreed, among other things, to promote the role of research and researchers for the social and economic progress of the territory. STAR follows the successful PROSIT project which constituted in 2009 the first entry of the Trieste System in the Researchers’ Night event. In the STAR project the University of Trieste coordinates a team of 10 research organizations, integrated by the Trieste Municipality and Province. This strong partnership guarantees that a wide range of top quality scientific know-how and personnel will be available to the project and, ultimately, to the public that will participate in the event. The concept behind the STAR proposal is to bring researchers to the public rather than viceversa, as in open day events. The event will thus take place in “Piazza Unità”, the biggest sea-facing square in Europe, and in the surrounding pedestrian area, the heart of Trieste’s public life. The activities proposed for the Night will form a unique blend of science and fun that will perfectly integrate with popular Friday night’s entertainments and prove to be attractive for a wide range of participants. Special consideration has been given to achieving a high participation by the junior public and a number of activities have been specifically designed in order to make the event attractive to them. In addition, STAR will launch a strong promotion campaign that will engage the partners in cooperative activities with schools, which will continue after the event and will be an important part of the dissemination campaign.
